Juicy and Tender Instant Pot St. Louis Ribs
I am cooking using Instant Pot a lot lately. I just ‘discover’ that Instant Pot is a go-to if I want to have a super quick juicy and tender ribs. It takes about 1 hour or so to prepare this Instant Pot St. Louis ribs. The shorter time of cooking does not affect the result. The Instant Pot ribs are still juicy, tender and as delicious as baking it slowly in the oven, like this delicious BBQ ribs. It’s my first-time cooking ribs this way and I am amazed as how tender the ribs turn out.
So, YES, you can have flavorful, finger licking, fall-of-the-bone ribs done in an hour or so by using Instant Pot. I am loving these Instant Pot St. Louis ribs (and Instant Pot, of course!). I hope you will give it a try too.
Tip: You can make this in your slow cooker too. Cook it under low setting for 8 hours or high setting for 4 hours.
Ingredient:
- 3 lbs. St. Louis ribs – clean and remove the membrane (if you are using leaner meat, add 1/2 cup of water to the instant pot to avoid burning)
- ½ cup BBQ sauce (I use Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce)
- 1 teaspoon hickory liquid smoke (optional)
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- ½ tablespoon paprika powder
- 1 tablespoon five-spice powder
- 2 teaspoons sea salt
- 1 tablespoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup of chicken broth (if you are using leaner type of ribs)
Direction:
- Make the dry rub: In a small bowl, add garlic powder, five-spice powder, paprika powder, salt and pepper.
- Clean the ribs and pat dry. Use a small sharp knife to pry on the corner, then use a paper towel to pull the membrane and peel it off.
- Cut the ribs to smaller pieces by slicing in between the bones.
- Rub all over the ribs with the previously made dry rub – until all gone.
- Place the ribs into Instant Pot (or any pressure cooker). If you are using leaner type of ribs, don’t forget to add the chicken broth.
- Sprinkle the liquid smoke (optional).
- Pour the BBQ sauce and give it a good mix.
- Then, cook on manual setting – normal high pressure – for 30 minutes.
- After that, let the steam release on its own before opening the lid. Once it is done, take out the ribs and place on a plate.
- Leave the sauce on the instant pot and choose sauté setting and cook for another 10 minutes for the sauce to thicken. Drizzle the sauce over the ribs.
- Serve the ribs with your favorite sides. Enjoy!

I ended up having to add about a cup of liquid to keep the IP from shutting down with the Burn error message. Once I added liquid ( cup of Pepsi) everything worked fine.
Hi Lynda, thank you for trying it out and pointing out that you need to add more liquid. I should have mentioned that using meat on the leaner side, have to add extra liquid. Good thinking of adding a cup of Pepsi, I should try that next time, usually, I just added a bit more water or a bit more hickory liquid smoke. Hope you enjoyed this recipe. 😊
Are use two racks of ribs little over 5 pounds. I added a cup of chicken broth instead of water or use my own homemade rubs, let it marinate overnight with the rub. The ribs came out great fall off the bone. I will be using that again. Thank you.
Ah, that’s a good idea of using chicken broth. I shall try that. Good to know that you are able to use this recipe and tweak it to your liking. 🙂
