Instant Hawaiian Loco Moco with Caramelized Onion
The infamous Hawaiian cuisine that you can make using the common pantry staple, this instant Hawaiian Loco Moco is the answer. Why instant? Basically, I am upgrading store-bought beef patties and putting things together to make the Hawaiian Loco Moco. Also, caramel onion to the Loco Moco is bringing the taste up a notch. Imagine having juicy burger tucked in a bed of rice, covered in gravy, caramelized onion and finished off with a runny sunny-side egg. What a combination!
In this instant Hawaiian Loco Moco recipe, I am going to use store-bought beef hamburger patty and brown gravy mix. That’s why this recipe is on my instant 2.0 category, just like my instant Korean Rabokki. Of course, you can always use homemade beef patties and gravy, if you prefer. However, if you want to have a quick way of making this Hawaiian cuisine, Loco Moco, this recipe will not disappoint. Let’s get cooking, shall we?
Tool I used:
- Non-stick skillet – Easy to clean, heat-up evenly, and, the best part, it is non-stick. Great tool to have for stir-frying, making omelet, and much more.
- Non-stick saucepan – I love this saucepan as it is heating evenly. The size seems a big bigger to make sauce, however, I use this also to make small batch of soup or just my comfort food, instant noodle soup.
- Electric griddle – This gadget is a time-saver if you want to make a complete breakfast items (pancake, egg, bacon, and so on) or just want to cook some burger as you can cook them at the same time. Plus, it is easy to clean too. A must-have multi-tasking kitchen gadget.
Tip: To have a perfect caramelized onion, cook under low heat, so that we do not burn it. The slow cooking process will let the onion release its sweetness naturally. Also, use griddle to save cooking time. If you are using a griddle, you can cook the onion on onside and the beef patties on the other side. Then, once the beef patties are done, set aside and cook eggs.
Ingredient:
- 4 beef hamburger patties (or salmon, veggie, or your favorite patties)
- 4 eggs
- 1 pack brown gravy mix
- 1 medium onion – peeled and chopped
- 3 tablespoons of butter
- 1 cup of water
- Steamed rice
- Chopped parsley to garnish (optional)
Direction:
- Melt one tablespoon of butter under low-medium heat on a skillet. Add chopped onion and spread them out. To caramelize the onion, we need to cook it under low heat, so that we do not burn the onion. Stir occasionally. They will be done when the color is a bit brownish or cook for about 15-20 minutes. Set aside.
- In the meantime, on a different skillet, melt one tablespoon of butter under medium heat. Place some patties. Cook for about 3-5 minutes per side. If you want it well-done, cook it longer. Set aside.
- Using the same skillet, melt the last tablespoons of butter. Lower the heat to low. Crack the eggs and place carefully on the skillet. Cook for about 3-5 minutes. Set aside.
- Let’s make the gravy. Pour one cup of water in a small saucepan. Add one pack of brown gravy mix in it. Whisk it. Turn on the heat to low and keep whisking until the gravy is bubbling. Set aside.
- Now, time to assemble. Place one scoop of rice on a plate. Then, add one patty on top of the rice, caramelized onion, and some gravy. Lastly, top it off with a sunny-side egg, and sprinkled with some chopped parsley.
- Enjoy them while it’s still warm. Add some ketchup for more flavor. Bon appetite!
